Hawai‘i Concludes Season with 2-1 Loss to Cal State Fullerton

Waipio, O'ahu— The University of Hawaii 2018 soccer season came to an end with a 2-1 loss to visiting Cal State Fullerton at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

The Rainbow Wahine (9-7-1, 4-4) entered the match at No. 5 in the Big West Conference standings after UC Davis beat UC Riverside, 1-0, earlier in the day. The win by the Aggies leaped them ahead of UH in the standings, and the following loss solidified UH at No. 5 to conclude the season.

The Titans struck first with a breakaway goal in the 25th minute by Atlanta Primus. In the first 45 minutes of action, CSF managed just two shots versus eight for UH, but CSF capitalized on its chances.

A UH equalizer followed later in the second half, and it came from one of the two seniors making their final appearance at WPSS. In the 57th minute, midfielder Sarah Lau pulled in a loose ball after a throw-in. Lau gathered the ball, spun around and fired into the net, pulling the match to a 1-1 tie, notching her fifth goal of the year.

Moments later in the 67th minute, CSF responded with a go-ahead goal from Nano Oronoz, who collected a long ball in front of UH redshirt junior goalkeeper Alexis Mata and knocked it in from point-blank range. Following the goal, UH pressed forward and nearly produced a goal to send the match into overtime.

In the 88th minute, senior midfielder Raisa Strom-Okimoto was fouled in the box giving them a penalty kick opportunity. Lau had the chance to play hero again as she was selected to take the penality kick, but her shot sailed over the crossbar, leaving the contest at a 2-1 disadvantage for the home squad.

Strom-Okimoto produced five shots in the match, including one on-goal. Mata finished the match with three saves while opposite goalkeeper Allison Poole collected seven on her own for CSF. UH played aggressively, outshooting CSF, 19-9, in the match.

For head coach Michele Nagamine, the season wrapped up as one of her best. Tying the previous highest mark for UH in the conference standings at No. 5, equalling a finish from 2013, and tying her previous mark for most wins in a season at nine, a feat she accomplished in 2016. The four wins against Big West opponents is the most since joining the conference in 2012.

Strom-Okimoto's career will go down as one of the most memorable to play for the 'Bows, as she finished in the top 10 of nine different offensive categories. Those include points, goals scored, assists, game-winning goals, shots, shots on goal, multiple assist matches, and overtime goals.
