CAREFREE, Ariz. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team fired a final round 306 Sunday for a 957 total at the season-opening Maui Jim Intercollegiate at the Desert Forest Golf Club.
The Rainbow Warriors finished in 13
th place in a competitive field that was won by Arizona State (857), who edged runner-up Georgia Tech (858) to rally to win by one stroke. Kent State, the tourney's leader for the first two rounds, finished two strokes back at 859.
ASU's Alex Del Rey Gonzalez shot a final round 65 to capture medalist honors at 10-under 206. Lipscomb's Dawson Armstrong was three strokes back at 209.
Senior Chayutpol Kittirattanapaiboon and junior
Sam Schwartz tied for the team's top honors at 237 to finish in a three-way tie for 67
th place. After a forgettable first round 89, Kittirattanapaiboon shot 4-over during his final two rounds. Schwartz ended the tournament with consecutive rounds of 78.
Junior
Cameron Kaneko posted a final round 77 to finish at 241 and a tie for 72
nd while sophomore
Nick Nelson was one stroke back at 242 with is second straight 80. Sophomore
Taiga Iwasa rounded out the UH contingent in 78
th place at 270.
The Warriors will next compete in the Alister MacKenzie Invitational, Oct. 9-10 in Fairfax, Calif.
