HONOLULU—The University of Hawai'i softball team (28-22, 7-12 Big West) fell in a pitchers' duel to Long Beach State, 1-0. UH starter
Brittany Hitchcock (18-12) suffered the loss without giving up an earned run while Cielo Meza (6-3) earned the win on Thursday night at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium.
In the top of the first with two outs, the 49ers' Jessica Flores reached on an error on the first baseman off a muffed throw from Hitchcock. Flores stole second, but an errant throw from the catcher allowed her to move to third base. Lauren MacLeod then chopped a single through the leftside of the infield for the only run of the game.
Hitchcock allowed only two hits with no walks and three strikeouts in a complete game effort. It was Hitchcock's 27
th complete game of the season. She retired the last 13 batters in a row and faced just 24 batters.
Long Beach State's Meza fired a one-hit shutout over the 'Bows, issuing one walk with nine strikeouts to stymie Hawai'i. Meza also retired the last 13-straight batters in the game and she did not allow a runner past first base.
The two teams will square off in a series and season-ending doubleheader on Friday night. It will be Senior Night for three Rainbow Wahine –
Kanani Aina Cabrales,
Ulu Matagiese, and
Heather Morales.
