DENVER –
Monk Berger broke the program record for career shutouts, and two Hawai'i goals in a five minute span in the second half gave the Hawai'i women's soccer team a 2-0 win at Denver on Sunday.
Berger's shutout was the 13
th of her career, and the fourth in five games for the senior. She breaks Kori Lu's (2005-08) previous school record of 12 career solo shutouts.
The game was tied early in the second half when senior
Addie Steiner chased down a long ball and eventually earned a corner kick for Hawai'i.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto's kick pin-balled dangerously in the box until
Paige Okazaki tracked it down and beat DU goalkeeper Brittany Wilson to put Hawai'i ahead 1-0 in the 55
th minute. It was the first game-winner and second career goal for Okazaki.
Less than five minutes later Steiner joined in on the scoring. A through ball from
Dani Crawford set her up behind the DU defense with only Wilson to beat, and Steiner found the far corner for her second goal this season to give Hawai'i a 2-0 lead in the 59
th minute. It was Crawford's first career assist.
Hawai'i held a 14-12 advantage in shots, including a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. Denver took six corner kicks in the game, while UH had four.
Steiner had a game-high five shots, including two on goal, and Okazaki and
Kellsie Gleason and finished with two shots. Berger had three saves.
The Rainbow Wahine wrap up their three-game road trip on Sept. 13 at Air Force in their final non-conference contest of the season. Big West Conference play begins for Hawai'i on Sept. 30 at Cal Poly.
