Waipahu, O'ahu – NCAA Soccer matches are supposed to last 90 minutes. But don't tell the Hawai'i Rainbow Wahine that. For the third time in four games this season, Hawai'i needed overtime, and Saturday night it was sophomore
Raisa Strom-Okimoto delivering the game-winner in the 96
th minute as the Rainbow Wahine beat Idaho State 1-0 to win the Outrigger Soccer Classic.
Strom-Okimoto played a corner kick short to
T.J. Reyno, then got the ball back from Reyno, dribbled to the top corner of the box and pulled the trigger on the game-winner. It was her team-best second goal of the year, and first game-winner.
"She scored some goals like that in training," Hawai'i coach
Michele Nagamine said of Strom-Okimoto's goal. "When Raisa connects with that in-step, it's a knuckleball, and it's really hard to defend and to see as a goalkeeper."
Senior goalkeeper
Monk Berger earned the shutout for UH, highlighted by a diving save in the 81
st minute. Berger got her out-stretched fingers on a shot from Idaho State's Michaela Diderickson that was otherwise destined for the upper right corner of the net.
"That was an amazing save," Nagamine said. "That was probably the best save I've seen in her career. It was a phenomenal shot. That ball was going in. I really have to hand it to Monk. She deserves that clean sheet. She played with a lot of confidence I was really proud of her. I've been waiting for her to have this kind of game."
Berger earned all-tournament team honors for her efforts, along with Strom-Okimoto and Reyno. UH senior
Storm Kenui earned tournament MVP honors after scoring the game-winner in double-overtime against Sacramento State earlier in the week, and playing a major role in keeping the Bengals off the scoreboard on Saturday.
While it took the Rainbow Wahine until the 96
th minute to find the back of the net, it wasn't for a lack of chances. Hawai'i had 23 shots in the game, including 12 on goal, while Idaho State (2-3-0) finished with 12 shots, and four on goal.
Hawai'i extends its winning streak to three and its overall unbeaten streak to four. The Rainbow Wahine (3-0-1) are also riding a 10-match unbeaten streak in overtime games, including two wins and a tie in 2016.
Idaho State goalkeeper Shawna Hennings, who also earned all-tournament team honors, finished with 11 saves. The Rainbow Wahine held an 8-6 advantage in corner kicks.
Hawai'i returns to action on Sept. 1 to host Idaho in the third part of the Outrigger Soccer Classic Series. The Rainbow Wahine will then face Saint Mary's on Sept. 2 to wrap up the tournament.
