Iwata Selected For U.S. Women's National Baseball Team

FULLERTON, Calif.—Former University of Hawai'i softball All-American Jessica Iwata (Lihu'e, Kaua'i , Kaua'i HS) has been selected to represent the United States on the Women's National Team that will be competing in the World Baseball/Softball Confederation (WBSC) Women's Baseball World Cup. The tournament will be played in Gijang, South Korea from September 3-11, 2016.
 
Iwata was a four-year starter at shortstop for the Rainbow Wahine softball team from 2010-13. She helped lead the 'Bows to three conference titles and three NCAA appearances—including the program's first trip to the Women's College World Series. She finished her career ranked in the top five for UH in eight statistical categories, including a .360 batting average, 249 hits, 177 runs scored, 46 doubles, 55 home runs and a UH-career record 197 runs batted in. Iwata was just the second player in UH softball history to earned first team all-conference honors all four years of her career. 
 
The Women's National Team includes 20 players, ranging in age from 16 to 42, were selected from the 38 participants in the 2016 Women's National Team Trials. The team will train for five days in Villa Park, Fullerton, and Compton, Calif., before departing for South Korea.

Players from 10 different states are on the squad. California is the most represented state with five players, followed by Texas with three. Virginia, South Carolina, Florida and Washington each have a pair of players, while Nevada, Louisiana, Hawaii and New York have one apiece.

The No. 2-ranked USA Baseball Women's National Team will face No. 9 Hong Kong in the Opening Round of the WBSC Women's Baseball World Cup on September 3. Be sure to follow the Women's National Team on Twitter (@USABaseballWNT) for scores, updates, photos and more.
