HONOLULU – The Hawai'i women's soccer team gave up an early goal to Oregon in the 2016 season-opener on Friday night, but battled back to a 1-1 tie against the Ducks in the Outrigger Resorts Soccer Classic at Waipio Peninsula Soccer Stadium.
Oregon took the lead less than three minutes into the game on a goal from Kyra Fawcett, but Hawai'i junior
Sonest Furtado evened the score in the 17
th minute, and neither team could capitalize on chances late in regulation or overtime.
The Ducks out-shot the Rainbow Wahine 24-14 overall, but it was Hawai'i that was the aggressor down the stretch, out-shooting Oregon 5-2 in the two overtime periods combined.
Senior goalkeeper
Monk Berger finished with nine saves for the Rainbow Wahine, and sophomore
Raisa Strom-Okimoto had a team-high five shots, including three on goal. Oregon keeper Katelyn Carter made seven saves in the game.
It seemed as though the 'Bows were defending the corner kick all night, as Oregon tallied 13 corner kicks to Hawai'i's two. Four Rainbow Wahine field players played all 110 minutes, including Stork Kenui,
T.J. Reyno, Strom-Okimoto and
Paige Okazaki.
The Rainbow Wahine (0-0-1) wrap up the weekend against Nevada (0-1-0) on Aug. 21 at 4:00 p.m. at WPSS.
