HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team gave a gritty effort before eventually falling to Seton Hall, 68-57, on the first day of the FS1 Pearl Harbor Invitational Tuesday night Bloch Arena at Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam.
The Rainbow Warriors (4-4) suffered through its worst offensive performance of the early season, but through sheer effort stayed within striking distance for much of the game.
UH shot just 32 percent from the floor and were also doomed by 18 turnovers which the Pirates (6-2) converted into 25 points. Seton Hall finished the game with 13 steals.
Brocke Stepteau typified UH's relentless play and led the 'Bows with 17 points off the bench, including a trio of long-range three-pointers. Despite foul trouble in the second half,
Gibson Johnson finished with 12 points and a team-high seven rebounds.
Playing its first game outside of the Stan Sheriff Center this year, UH got off to another slow start as the Pirates reeled off the game's first seven points. But UH responded with a 10-1 run to take a 10-8 lead six minutes into the game. Unfortunately it was the only lead UH would enjoy.
UH shot just 25 percent (7-of-28) and committed 12 first-half turnovers. More than half of Seton Hall's points in the first period (18) came off UH turnovers (12). Yet remarkably UH trailed just 33-25 at the half.
UH continued to hang around in the second half and a
Sheriff Drammeh jumper made it 48-42 with just 9:30 remaining. However, that would be as close as the 'Bows would get as a 15-6 run over the next six minutes put the game out of reach.
Khadeen Carrington scored a game-high 19 points to pace Seton Hall, while Angel Delgado recroded a double-double with 16 points and 14 rebounds.
The Rainbow Warriors will next face Princeton Wednesday, Dec. 7, on the 75th Anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Tipoff is set for 4:30 p.m.
