NORTHRIDGE, Calif. – The Hawai'i women's soccer team battled Big West Conference regular-season champion CSUN for more than 100 minutes on Sunday, but came up empty-handed when the Matadors got the game-winning goal in double-overtime to beat the Rainbow Wahine 1-0 in the season-finale.
Hawai'i finishes the season with a 9-6-2 record and 2-5-1 mark in Big West play, while CSUN, which picked up its fifth consecutive 1-0 win within the conference, heads to the Big West Tournament with an 11-3-5 record and 6-1-1 record in Big West play.
Kourtney Kutscher scored the game's only goal in the first minute of the second-overtime off of a pass that set her up in the box behind the Hawai'i defense. Cynthia Sanchez and Nicole Thompson picked up assists on the score.
The Rainbow Wahine had chances of their own in regulation and overtime, but couldn't break through. The 'Bows were out-shot 15-14 overall and 7-5 in shots on goal. The Matadors held a significant advantage in corner kicks, 9-3.
Raisa Strom-Okimoto and
Addie Steiner both finished with three shots for Hawai'i, while
Sonest Furtado,
Dani Crawford, and
Kellsie Gleason each had two.
Monk Berger had six saves in goal.
Hawai'i's nine wins in 2016 are the most for the program since 2007, and the 9-6-2 overall record is a 6.5-win improvement from a season ago.
