Live ScoringSAN LUIS OBISPO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team finished in ninth place at the Big West Conference Championship, Tuesday, at the San Luis Obispo Country Club, closing out the 2014-15 season.
After opening the tournament with a 316, the Rainbow Warriors improved in each of the past two rounds, finishing with a 299 on Tuesday for a 922 total (316-307-299).
UC Irvine (860) snapped Cal State Fullerton's two-year title run to capture this year's championship by one stroke over UC Davis (861). UCI overtook UCD with a final round 285. UC Riverside finished third (871) followed by Long Beach State and UC Santa Barbara (875), Cal Poly (876), CSUN (899), Cal State Fullerton (901), and UH (922).
Cal Poly's Justin De Los Santos shot a final round 69 to capture medalist honors at 2-over 212. UC Irvine's Pete Fernandez, who entered the day tied for the lead with David Gazzolo of UC Riverside, finished runner-up at 3-over 213 while UCD's Matt Seramin and UCI's Jacob Schulze tied for third at 4-over 214. Gazzolo shot a final round 76 and finished ninth.
UH's top finisher was junior
Scotty Yamashita, who tied for 28
th at 226 (78-78-70) after a final round even par 70. The Honolulu native was steady throughout, posting two birdies and two bogeys on his round. Freshman
Smart Kittirattanapaiboon completed his best finish as a Rainbow Warrior, tying for 33
rd place with a 229 total (77-75-77). As he did the first two days, the Thailand native started his final round with a birdie on his opening hole, the par-5, 10
th.
Senior
Ryan Kuroiwa capped his career with a final round 75 to finish 43
rd at 234. Sophomore
Skye Inakoshi matched his first round 80 for a 236 total and 44
th place while sophomore
Pono Tokioka fired a final round 77 – his best of the tourney – to place 45
th at 253.
The championship was the final competition for Kuroiwa, a four-year letterman who competed in 28 career tournaments as a Rainbow Warrior. The 'Aiea, O'ahu native finished with a 76.1 career scoring average, two career Top 10s, and one tourney win at the 2014 Aloha@Oahu Invitational.
UH's other senior is
Brian Lee, who did not compete this week at the Big West Championship. The Honolulu native finished with a 76.0 career scoring average in 25 tournaments. His best finish was a tie for ninth at last year's conference championship, a season in which he posted two Top 10s.
