Live ScoringLIHUE, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is currently tied for sixth place after the first round of the John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Wednesday at the Wailua Golf Course.
The Rainbow Warriors spent most of the day in either the No. 2 or 3 spot before fading in the day's final holes to shoot 5-over 293 along with Colorado State. Four-time defending champion California holds the first day lead at 6-under 282 followed by UNLV (287), Texas A&M (288), UTEP (289), and Virginia (291). UH's "B" team is in 17
th place at 313.
Cal's Shotaro Ban is the Round 1 leader after a 5-under 67, one stroke better than Arizona's George Cunningham. UNLV's John Oda, a Moanalua High School graduate, is third at 3-under 69.
UH's
Justin Chu, competing for the "A" team, led all Rainbow Warrior golfers and is one of only 15 golfers to shoot under par with a 1-under 71. The Honolulu native started his round at No. 4 hole, was 3-under through his front nine with birdies at Nos. 5, 9, and 10. But consecutive bogeys on Nos. 14 and 15 dropped him back to 1-under. He birdied the par-4 16
th and bogeyed his finishing hole, the par-3 third.
Junior
Scotty Yamashita also recorded three birdies through his front nine although coupled with two bogeys to make the turn at 1-under. The Honolulu native then parred the next seven holes before a double bogey on the par-3 17
th pushed him back over par.
Senior
Brian Lee shot 2-over 74 in a round that included two birdies and four bogeys. Sophomore
Skye Inakoshi was 1-under through 13 holes before bogeying four of his last five holes. Lihu'e native
Pono Tokioka struggled with a 10-over 82.
Junior college transfer Chad McLay led the "B" squad with a 4-over 76 in his first tournament as a Rainbow Warrior. Senior
Ryan Kuroiwa and freshman
Smart Kittirattanapaiboon each fired 77 while freshman
Adrian Lee shot 83.
The tournament continues on Thursday with the second round.
