James "Kimo" Scott, a former UH student-athlete and Letterwinner, was the first customer to walk into the new H-Zone store at the Ward Center today (July 1) at 10:00 a.m. when the store opened for the first time.
Scott, a resident of Pearl City, was a member of the UH men's golf team from 1971-73 and captained the squad in 1972 and 1973.
He also was a member of the UH cheerleading squad from 1972-75 and started the first scholarship program for cheerleaders in 1972.
Scott graduated from UH Manoa with a degree in sociology in 1973 and also attended graduate school at UH until 1975.
"I think this is huge," Scott said. "For so many years, I wondered why other entities were profiting off merchandise that featured the UH Athletics Department's logos. It's great to see that UH Athletics is now generating revenue from this source to benefit its teams and student-athletes. We've turned a corner and now we're in better control of our own destiny."
