HONOLULU – Prior to the University of Hawai'i baseball team's defeat of Albany on Friday, a special on-field ceremony was held recognizing the 30
th anniversary of Les Murakami Stadium. Legendary and former UH baseball coach Les Murakami, along with his wife Dot, received a framed copy of the commemorative 30
th anniversary logo from coach
Mike Trapasso signed by the members of the 2014 UH baseball team.
Also joining the pregame festivities were UH Athletics Director
Ben Jay, Big West Conference Commissioner Dennis Farrell, and Aaron Fujii of Mitsunaga & Associates, the architectural firm that drew up the original stadium plans.
What was originally known as Rainbow Stadium was built 30 years ago and opened its doors for its inaugural game on February 17, 1984. The stadium was widely considered the finest collegiate ballpark in the country and 30 years later still stands as one of the premier collegiate baseball venues. In 2002, the University of Hawaii decided to change the name to Les Murakami Stadium honoring the legendary coach and man responsible for its building.
The stadium is affectionately known as "the house that Les built."
