Men’s Golf Completes Burns Intercollegiate First Round

WAILUA, Kaua'i – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team completed the first day of the 38th John A. Burns Intercollegiate, Wednesday, at the Wailua Golf Course. The "B" team is in 15th place at 297 while the "A" team is 17th at 299.
 
Senior Nainoa Calip was UH's top finisher for the "A" squad at 1-over 73 and is tied for 30th place. He was 4-over after six holes before finishing his final 12 holes in 3-under par. During a five-hole stretch, the Hilo, Hawai'i native posted four birdies, three of which at par 5 holes.
 
Also competing for the "A" team is junior Brian Lee and sophomore Scotty Yamashita, who each shot 3-over 75 and are tied for 51st while senior David Saka and freshman Skye Inakoshi shot 76 and are currently in 67th place.
 
Junior Ryan Kuroiwa was the "B" team's top finisher at 1-over 73 and is in a 10-way tie for 30th. Starting on the 10th hole, the 'Aiea, O'ahu native played his final 10 holes in 1-under par including nine straight pars and a birdie on the par-5 18th. Senior Tommy Yamashita shot a solid 2-over 74 and is tied for 40th.
 
Freshman Zachary Braunthal and sophomore Justin Chu each posted 75 while freshman Pono Tokioka, a Lihue native, shot 80.
 
Arizona's Erik Oja fired an 8-under 64, three strokes better than defending champion Joel Stalter of California. Oja's bogey-free round included eight birdies, including four straight to start his round.
 
Three-time defending champion California holds the first day lead at 10-under 278. The Golden Bears hold a seven-stroke lead over Arizona, who shot 285 while No. 12 Texas A&M is third at 286. Rounding out the top 10 is BYU (287), New Mexico (288), Washington State (291), Long Beach State and UTEP (292), and Colorado State, Pacific and UNLV (293).
 
The tournament continues on Thursday with the second round.
