Hawai‘i Places Third In Big West Commissioner’s Cup

IRVINE, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i finished the 2012-13 campaign with a third-place finish in the Big West Commissioner's Cup. UH produced a strong showing after making its debut in four men's sports, while returning numerous women's programs back into the league for the first time in more than 15 years.
 
Long Beach State vaulted its way to the top of the Commissioner's Cup standings after an outstanding spring season, winning the award for the third consecutive season and fifth time overall. LBSU posted a Cup-winning 139.3 point average over 14 sports. Second place went to UC Santa Barbara with 120.7 points over 15 sports.
 
Hawai'i finished third overall with a 116.9-point average over 13 sports. UH was powered by titles in women's volleyball, softball and women's water polo. UH also earned a second-place finish in women's basketball. This year marked the return of UH's women's program's to the Big West Conference where they previous competed from 1984 to '96.
 
The Big West Commissioner's Cup, which started during the 1998-99 season, is presented at the end of the spring season to the institution with the top overall point average tallied from Big West Conference Championships.  To determine the champion for the Commissioner's Cup, total points are summed and divided by the number of championships in which each institution competes.  Each sport regular season champion is also given a 20-point bonus.
