Final Results
SAN JACINTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team concluded its first-ever Big West Conference Championship with a sixth place finish Tuesday at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.
The Warriors (292-304-310=906), the tournament's first round leader, shot a final round 310. Pacific (887) edged Cal State Fullerton (887) in a one-hole playoff to capture the league's automatic berth into the NCAA Championship. UC Davis was third (890) followed by UC Santa Barbara (892), Long Beach State (894), UH (906), UC Irvine (908), UC Riverside (912), Cal Poly (928), and Cal State Northridge (928).
UH junior
Nainoa Calip, who was tied for the first day lead, carded a final round 76 and placed seventh overall with a three-round score of 4-over 220 (69-75-76). The Hilo, Hawai'i native could not overcome a triple bogey on the 4
th hole and finished his final 14 holes in 1-over par.
Medalist honors also was decided by a playoff as round two leader Corey Gard of Cal State Fullerton crumbled with a final round 77, including a bogey on the 18
th hole to fall into a playoff with UC Santa Barbara's Brett Silvernail and UOP's Eric Sugimoto, all of whom finished 1-over 217 for the tournament. Silvernail was eliminated after the first playoff hole and Sugimoto edged Gard on the second hole to capture the title.
Senior
Cory Oride completed his UH career with a final round 76 to tie for 20
th at 10-over 226 (73-77-76). The Lihu'e, Kaua'i native was even par with two birdies and six pars during an eight hole stretch but suffered double bogeys on Nos. 14 and 16 to finish 4-over for the day.
Freshman
Scotty Yamashita and junior
David Saka each shot 77 on Tuesday. Yamashita got off to a horrible start with two bogeys and two doubles through his first four holes but rallied to shoot 1-over over the final 14 holes. Saka's only birdie of the day occurred at the par-3 13
th, which he also birdied on Sunday to account for his only two birdies of the tournament. Both Yamashita (77-74-79) and Saka (73-78-79) tied for 29
th at 230.
Junior
Tommy Yamashita shot a final round 83 and took 50
th at 252 (85-84-83).
The tournament concludes the season for the Warriors.
