Men’s Golf Drops Back After Day 2 Of Big West Championship

Round 2 Results

SAN JACINTO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team dropped back to fifth place following the second round of the Big West Conference Championship Monday at The Country Club at Soboba Springs.
 
The Warriors (292-304=596) entered the day holding a one-stroke lead but that slipped away on the front nine as the team made the turn at 13-over par. UH is still just nine strokes off the lead, held by Pacific, who shot a second round 289 and is 587 for the tournament, four strokes ahead of Cal State Fullerton (592). CSUF, UC Davis (592), Long Beach State (593), UH, UC Santa Barbara (597), and UC Irvine (598) are all bunched up and separated by seven strokes.
 
The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third and final round. The Warriors are looking for their first-ever conference title in their first season in the Big West.
 
CSUF's Corey Gard followed his opening round 69 with a 1-under 71 on Monday and holds a three-stroke lead over UOP's Eric Sugimoto, who shot 69, matching the low round of the day along with teammate SeungJae Maeng, a Moanalua High School graduate, and UC Davis' Jonny Baxter.
 
UH junior Nainoa Calip, who was tied for the first round lead after an opening round 69, battled back to shoot  3-over 75 and is in third place at even-par 144. The junior from Hilo, Hawai'i posted four birdies, five bogeys, and one double on his round. After 11 holes, Calip was 6-over for the day but finished his round going 3-under over his final seven holes, carding birdies at Nos. 16 and 17 for the second straight day.
 
Senior Cory Oride shot 5-over 77 and is tied for 18th at 6-over 150 for the tournament while junior David Saka posted 78 and is tied for 25th at 151.
 
Freshman Scotty Yamashita had another up-and-down round which featured seven birdies, five bogeys and two doubles in a round of 2-over 74. The Honolulu native, battled back with birdies on Nos. 16 and 18, and is tied with Saka for 25th at 7-over 151 for the tournament. Junior Tommy Yamashita shot 84 and is in 50th place at 169.
