LOS ANGELES, Calif. – In its first road match of the season, the University of Hawai'i Warrior tennis team beat Loyola Marymount, 5-2, on Tuesday at the LMU Tennis Center. UH improves to 3-5 while LMU drops to 0-9.
Jonathan Brooklyn won the deciding point with his win at first singles, beating Othar Kordsachia 6-0, 6-7, 6-0.
The Warriors took the lead with a sweep in doubles play. Carter Lam and Nils Schuhmann won at three doubles, then Jared Spiker and David Schuster paired up for their second straight doubles win, downing Todd Volmari and Daniel Simko at the two, 8-4, to clinch the doubles point.
Singles play featured back-and-forth action beginning with Volmari evening the match for LMU with a quick 6-3, 6-1 win at singles over Dmytro Kovalyov. The score was knotted at 2-2 when Schuhmann won a second set tiebreak to win in straight sets and put the Warriors one win away from victory. Brooklyn was equal to the task in topping Kordsachia to clinch the win.
UH remains in Los Angeles and will face No. 2 UCLA on Wednesday. First serve is set for 1:30 p.m. PT (11:30 a.m. HT).
