Men’s Golf Hanging Tough At Lexus Classic

Day 1 Results

FRESNO, Calif. – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team is currently in 14th place after the first two rounds of the Fresno State Lexus Golf Classic, Monday at the Belmont Country Club.

The Warriors are currently at 13-over 733 after posting a first round 368 and second round 365 during the grueling 36-hole first day. Heading into the final two holes of the day, the Warriors were at 6-over, which would have placed them 10th heading into Tuesday's final round. However, the team dropped seven strokes.

Top-ranked California, which is coming off a win at the John Burns Intercollegiate two weeks ago, is atop the team leaderboard at 26-under 694, 22 shots clear of second place and host Fresno State (716).

Three Golden Bears are among the top three led by Michael Kim, who shot rounds of 68 and 65 for an 11-under 133 total. He is four shots ahead of a trio, including fellow Bears Michael Weaver (137) and Brandon Hagy (137) along with Oregon State's Nick Chianello.

UH's top golfer is junior Nainoa Calip, who shot consecutive rounds of even-par 72. The Hilo, Hawai'i native's first round included two birdies and two bogeys while his up-and-down second round featured five birdies, three bogeys and a double bogey. Calip is tied for 25th, one shot of teammate Ryan Kuroiwa, who is at 1-over 145. The 'Aiea, O'ahu native was steady throughout the day with five birdies and six bogeys in his two rounds.

Junior David Saka is two strokes behind Calip after rounds of 77 and 70. His second round 2-under 70 was best on the team during the day. Saka is in a tie for 51st, one stroke ahead of Cory Oride, who shot 72 and 76. After a solid even-par 72 in the first round, Oride was 1-over heading into the final six holes, where he posted four bogeys and one birdie to finish at 4-over 76.

Freshman Scotty Yamashita also struggled in his closing holes of Round 2, carding three bogeys in his final five holes to match his first round 75. He is at 6-over 150 and tied for 75. Tommy Yamashita is also competing for UH and fired rounds of 76 and 78 and is tied for 95th.

The tournament concludes on Tuesday with the third and final round.
