T.J. Kua capped his illustrious four-year career with a 10
th place finish at the Western Athletic Conference Championship, Wednesday, at the Rio Secco Golf Club. As a team, the Warriors finished seventh at 911.
Kua, a senior from Lihu'e, Kaua'i, shot a final round 4-over 76 to finish in a four-way tie for 10
th place at 6-over 222. In his four career appearances at a WAC Championship, Kua has finished no worse than 22
nd place. His finish marked the fourth Top 10 of the season and sixth of his career. Following the tournament, Kua was named to the five member all-WAC first team.
One day after shooting a 4-under 68 which included six birdies in his round, Kua struggled with four bogeys and no birdies on Wednesday. He managed to conclude the tournament as the team's top finisher for the seventh time this season.
San Jose State captured its first-ever WAC title with a three-round total of 876, winning by six strokes over New Mexico State (882). Fresno State was third (886) followed by Idaho (892), Louisiana Tech (902), Nevada (909), UH (911), and Utah State (919).
SJSU's Jay Myers took titlist honors by defeating New Mexico State's Justin Shin with a birdie on the first playoff hole. The pair finished the tournament at 5-under 211. Idaho's Sean McMullen was third at even-par 216.
Cory Oride finished in a tie for 21
st place at 12-over 228 (72-76-80) and earned second-team all-WAC honors.
Nainoa Calip tied for 26
th at 230 (73-76-81) while
Jared Sawada was 32
nd at 235 (81-78-76).
David Saka rounded out the UH contingent with a 36
th place finish at 240 (81-82-77).
The tournament marked the final WAC Championship for UH, who joins the Big West Conference next season.
