Balentine, Morrison Running Strong In WAC Heptathlon

Freshman Kaleigh Morrison set personal bests in all four events on the first day of the heptathlon at the WAC Outdoor Championships

HONOLULU – The University of Hawai'i women's track and field team completed Day 1 of the 2011 Western Athletic Conference Outdoor Championships Tuesday at the Clarence T.C. Ching Field.
 
After the first four disciplines of the heptathlon, sophomore Samantha Balentine is in sixth place with 3,277 points while freshman Kaleigh Morrison is in ninth with a personal-best 2,985 points.
 
Balentine started the day with a PR in the 100-meter hurdles with a time of 15.19 seconds and followed with the day's top mark and personal heptathlon event best in the high jump after clearing 5-9.25 (1.76m). She later posted marks of 34-5.5 (10.50m) in the shot put and 27.41 seconds in the 200-meters. Her Day 1 total of 2,985 points in a season-best.
 
Morrison, a freshman from Tigard, Ore., set personal-bests in all four events – 15.67 seconds in the 100-meter hurdles; 5-5.75 (1.67m) in the high jump; 32-0.75 (9.77m) in the shot put; and 27.91 seconds in the 200-meters.
 
Nevada's April Pate leads the competition with 3,277 points followed by Louisiana Tech's Jesseka Jones (3,250) and Utah State's Chari Hawkins (3,123).
 
The heptathlon concludes on Wednesday with the long jump, javelin, and 800-meters.
