Final Results
KAHUKU, O'ahu – The University of Hawai'i men's golf team earned an eighth place finish, Wednesday, at the Turtle Bay Resort College Invitational. Playing Round 3 on the George Fazio Course, a different course than the first two rounds, the Warriors improved their second-round score by 14 strokes for an 884 total (288-305-291).
Freshman
Cory Oride put up impressive numbers to lead UH at even-par (70-75-71=216). Oride sunk a total of eight birdies in the tournament, including four in the third round alone which allowed him to tie for 13
th place and earn the best finish of his collegiate career.
Sophomore #T.J. Kua# finished just three strokes behind Oride to tie for 18
th place at three-over-par (72-75-72=219). Also competing for the Warriors were junior
Kamden Brakel (76-75-74=225/T40th), sophomore
Jared Sawada (70-84-75-229/T45th), and freshman
Alex Chu (83-80-74=237/T55th).
Participating as individuals were freshman
Daniel Koge (85-78-74=237/T55th), freshman
Henry Park (79-82-82=243/61st), and sophomore
Pono Calip (81-86-85=252/T63rd).
San Diego State ran away with the lead to finish 16 shots ahead of the competition at 26-under par (288-305-291). SDSU's 838 three-round total is the second-best in the tournament's history, the lowest score of 800 carded by Tennessee in 2007.
SDSU's Andrew Cooley (70-68-71=209) began the day with a one-stroke lead over the competition but his teammate Alex Kang (68-73-68=209) caught up by firing a 68 on the round. Both men finished Round 3 tied at seven-under par which forced them into a sudden death playoff on the third hole, where Kang come out on top to win the tournament's individual title.
This tournament marked the end of the Warriors' fall season. They will return in the spring by co-hosting the 20th Mauna Lani Invitational with UH-Hilo, Feb. 3 through 5, in Kohala Coast, Hawai'i.
