RANCHO SANTA FE, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team dropped its sixth straight match on the road with a 5-2 loss at No. 48 San Diego State, Wednesday afternoon, at the Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. UH dropped to 2-10 on the 2008 season while the Aztecs improved to 11-6.
San Diego State earned the doubles point by winning two of the three matches. UH's sole victory came at the No. 2 position. The duo of freshman Dennis Lajola and junior Jeff Fitch rolled past the team of Achim Ceban and Tim Schulz van Endert 8-4.
In singles play, the Rainbow Warriors won two of the six matches. Junior Sascha Heinemann, ranked No. 115 in the latest ITA singles rankings, blew past Matan Shitrit in straight sets, 6-2, 6-3, at the No. 2 court. Heinemann has won five straight singles matches at the No. 2 and No. 3 positions.
Sophomore Andreas Weber, ranked No. 107, earned a 6-2, 7-6(4) victory over Juan Gomez at the No. 3 position and Fitch lost a tough 6-4, 6-2 match to Achim Ceban at the No. 5 court. Fitch earned Western Athletic Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week for the week of Mar. 24-30.
The Rainbow Warriors will conclude their three-match road trip on Friday, April 4, against No. 66 UC Irvine.
