Rainbow Wahine Fall 9-5 To Top-Ranked UCLA

HONOLULU - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai`i women's water polo team (13-5 overall, 6-2 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) put up a fight but in the end fell to top-ranked UCLA, 9-5, in a league match Friday at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

Junior Angela Turnbull led the Rainbow Wahine with three goals while junior Kelly Mason and sophomore Leonie Van Der Molen each scored one goal.

Freshman Serena Bredin had 10 saves in the match for the Rainbow Wahine.

The undefeated Bruins (22-0, 8-0) took an early lead scoring the first two goals of the match. The Rainbow Wahine quickly answered back with two goals by Van Der Molen and Turnbull, tying the score at the end of the first period.

In the second, both teams held each other to just one goal as the score was tied 3-3 at halftime.

UCLA dominated the second half with three goals by Courtney Mathewson in the third period. Turnbull's goal from nine-meters out with 10 seconds left pulled the Rainbow Wahine to within 7-4.

The Bruins went on to score another two times in fourth, giving them a five-point lead. Mason scored the final goal of the match for UH, closing the score to 9-5.

The story of the match was Hawai`i's inability to score on its six-on-five opportunities, scoring only once on five attempts in the second half.

The Rainbow Wahine conclude their homestand with an MPSF match against UC Irvine on Friday, April 4 at 4:00 p.m. at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.
