Oregon Outlasts Rainbow Warriors, 4-3

FRESNO, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team concluded their four-match road trip with a loss against Pac-10 foe Oregon, 4-3, Saturday afternoon, at Fresno's Spalding G. Wathen Tennis Center. The Rainbow Warriors dropped to 1-7 on the 2008 season.

UH lost the doubles point by losing two of the three matches. The dynamic duo of junior Sascha Heinemann and sophomore Andreas Weber crushed Oregon's Marco Verdasco and Francisco Gallardo at the No. 1 court, 8-1.

In singles play, the Rainbow Warriors' big three, Heinemann, Weber, and freshman sensation Dennis Lajola all won their matches at the top three singles positions. Lajola raced past Verdasco at the No. 1 court, 6-2, 6-1. Weber, ranked No. 25 in the latest ITA singles rankings, dropped Gallardo in straight sets, 6-2, 6-1, at the No. 2 position. Heinemann fought back to defeat Geoff Embry at the No. 3 court, 4-6, 6-0, 6-1.

With the team match score tied at 3-3, sophomore Spence Mendoza lost a heartbreaking three-set marathon to Mikael Myrhed at the No. 6 position, 5-7, 7-6, 7-6.

The Rainbow Warriors return home and will next play Southern Illinois on March 11. First serve is set for 3:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
