HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team defeated a team of UH alumni 6-0 at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Josh Slaats pitched 4.2 innings and got the victory while
Justin Costi took the loss for the alumni team.
Slaats pitched 4.2 innings, giving up just one hit and one walk while striking out two. Sam Spangler pitced 3.1 solid innings, allowing two walks and no hits while striking out three. Jayson Kramer picked up two strikeouts in one inning of work.
Derek DuPree was 2-for-2, including a beautiful bunt single that died just halfway up the third-base line, with a run scored. Brandon Haislet had two runs scored while Vinnie Catricala, Shane Hoey and Jeffrey Van Doornum had one RBI each. Nathan Young was 1-for-1 with a triple and a run scored.
After the first four innings of the game went scoreless, the Rainbows scored the first run of the game in the fifth inning as Hoey drove in Evan Zimny on a sacrifice fly. The 'Bows then scored two more runs on an error later in the inning to go ahead 3-0.
Haislet scored on a double steal in the seventh inning to make it 4-0. Van Doornum and Catricala later drove in runs in the eighth to make the final score 6-0.
Hawai`i officially starts the season next weekend with a three-game series vs. UH-Hilo, starting Feb. 15, at 6:35 p.m.
