Rainbow Wahine Hands Cal First Loss

BERKELEY, Calif. - The fourth-ranked University of Hawai'i women's water polo team made it two-for-two on its seven-match road trip with a 7-6 victory over No. 5 California, Thursday, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match at Spieker Aquatics Complex. The Rainbow Wahine improved to 2-0 while the Golden Bears (4-1) dropped their first match of the season.

Freshman Carmen Eggens scored the game-winner with just under 6:00 to play in the fourth quarter, snapping a 6-6 tie. Freshman goalie Serena Bredin had 10 saves in goal for the Rainbow Wahine.

Neither team had more than a one-goal lead throughout the match. The match featured seven lead changes and six ties. Eggens, junior Angela Turnbull, and junior Lisa van Raalte each scored two goals for the Rainbow Wahine. Junior Kelly Mason also found the net.

Meghan Corso led the Bears with three goals. Goalie Heather Stuart had 12 stops.

The Rainbow Wahine will next play a non-conference match against UC Santa Cruz on Friday before participating in the two-day Stanford Invitational. In the tournament, UH is scheduled to face San Jose State, three-time defending national champion UCLA, and Michigan.
