Rainbows Rally Late To Beat Panthers 5-3 In Seven-Inning Game

Box Score

HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (18-8) came back to beat the Wisconsin-Milwaukee Panthers (0-12) 5-3 in the second game of the double header at Les Murakami Stadium Saturday. Tyler Davis (3-0) pitched 2.2 scoreless innings of relief, striking three to get the win. Mike Rauwerdink (0-4) took the loss for UWM.

Brandon Haislet came up big for the 'Bows, going 2-for-3 with three RBI and a double. Kris Sanchez also was 2-for-3 with one RBI and a run while Evan Zimny went 1-for-2 with a double.

The Panthers got on the board first for the third-straight game, scoring a run in the top of the first. UH came right back as Sanchez drove in Derek DuPree in the bottom half of the inning, tying the score at 1-1.

Hawai`i had a great opportunity to take the lead in the second as Haislet led off with a single before Zimny doubled to give them two runners in scoring position with no outs. But UH failed to convert, keeping it tied at 1-1.

UWM took advantage in the fourth as Shawn Wozniak hit a solo home run, taking the 2-1 edge. The Rainbows came back with a run in the bottom of the fourth, tying it again at 2-2.

Wisconsin-Milwaukee again took a one-run lead in the top of the fifth on a run-scoring fielder's choice. Haislet then came up with the big hit in the bottom of the fifth, driving a two-run double to the center field wall, putting Hawai`i ahead 4-3.

The Rainbows added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth to go ahead 5-3. UWM threatened in the top of the seventh, loading the bases with two outs. But Davis was able to get out of it, striking out the final batter to close out the 5-3 victory.

The two teams close out their four-game series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium.
