Rainbow Wahine Outscore Michigan, 16-15, In Shootout

HONOLULU - Lisa van Raalte's goal with 14 seconds left lifted fourth-ranked Hawai`i past No. 16 Michigan, 16-15, in a non-league women's water polo match in front of 125 fans on an overcast, misty day at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

van Raalte opened up the scoring on a backhand from 2-meters at 6:34 in the first. Angela Turnbull scored 90 seconds later, then Anna Sieprath pumped in a man-up goal to make it 3-0 UH in the opening four minutes. UM's Julie Hyrne scored two unanswered goals to close the deficit to one before van Raalte found the back of the net as time expired.

The Wolverines struck in the opening minute of play in the second when Shana Welch streaked down the pool and scored a transition goal. UM tied it at four on Wesley Ellison's goal, but UH reclaimed the lead on a 6-on-5 goal by Sieprath. The two teams traded goals until UH got some breathing room as Mason ricocheted a shot off the left bar and later van Raalte squeezed one through a crowd on a man-up to give UH an 8-5 lead. Wolverine Carrie Frost then went bar down to make it 8-6 at the half.

UH scored the first three goals of the third quarter with Turnbull rifling in a shot off the right side, Amy Logan found the back of the net at 6:23, then Bagnall pumping through a man-up situation to make it 10-6 UH. UM's Welch scored her third goal, however, UH's Emily Cox got loose from 2-meters on the ensuing possession and found the back of the cage on a 6-on-5. UM's Hyrne turned in her third goal on a penalty shot, then teammate Farren Rixter pulled the Wolverines to within three, 12-9, turning in a man-up goal.

In a frantic fourth quarter that saw 10 goals scored combined, UH's Mason struck first scoring on a 6-on-5 in the opening minute. UM's Welch scored on a turnover deep in UH territory, then turned around and went bar down from the left side 19 seconds later. Then UM head coach Matt Anderson was ejected at the 5:38 mark that seemed to spark the Wolverines. UH's Sieprath made it 14-11, skipping in her third goal at the 5:17 mark on a man up. UM would then reel off four unanswered goals to take a 15-14 lead with 1:11 remaining. Mason brought UH even with her fourth goal at 1:02. Then with 14 seconds remaining, van Raalte got a feed inside from Bagnall and lobbed it over outstretch UM goalie Kristen Davis for the game-winner. Michigan had one last opportunity to tie it but UH stole the ball and secured the victory.

Mason and van Raalte led the way for UH with four goals each and Sieprath added three as seven total scored. In the cage, Danielle Ingram made her third straight start for UH going the distance and recording a career-high 15 saves.

Michigan was led by Welch's seven tallies while Hyrne posted three scores. Davis was in net for the Wolverines picking up 10 stops.

The Rainbow Wahine host Pacific in Mountain Pacific Sports Federation action March 14 at 4:00 p.m. at the DKAC. The final two home matches are against USC (March 17) and California (March 31).
