No. 4 Hawai`i Streaks Past Arizona State, 12-8

HONOLULU - Kelly Mason scored five goals for the second day in a row to lead No. 4 Hawai`i past No. 10 Arizona State, 12-8, in a Mountain Pacific Sports Federation match in front of 75 at the Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex.

UH's Angela Turnbull turned a 6-5 advantage into a score at the 6:03 mark in the first. ASU picked off a UH pass and converted the fast break goal by Addison Doud a minute later. Lisa van Raalte rebounded a caromed shot and skipped it through for a 2-1 UH lead. On UH’s next possession, Amy Logan rifled one through the left corner to make it a 3-1. ASU cut the deficit to one on Katie Hedley’s man-up goal at 1:22.

ASU knotted is at three on Amanda Stepp’s goal in the opening minute of the second. The Sun Devils had a chance to take the lead, but UH goalie Meike De Nooy blocked a 5-meter penalty shot. On the ensuing time down the pool, Kelly Mason broke the tie going bar-down from 7-meters. Mason put UH up 5-3 slamming a shot through the left side of the cage on a 6-on-5. ASU’s Hedley pulled the Sun Devils to within one connecting on a lob shot from 5-meters. ASU tied it on Doud’s goal on a spin move from 3-meters. With 18 seconds left before the half, Kristy Bagnall backhanded a 2-meter lob shot to give UH a 6-5 lead.

In the third quarter, UH took advantage of three-straight 6-on-5 possessions with Ryan Hanson-Swaner scoring once and Mason finding the back of the net twice to lead 8-5. ASU’s Doud found the upper left corner of the net on a backhand to cut it to 8-6. UH’s Mason recorded her fifth goal on a 5-meter skip shot in transition. Doud scooted it a skip shot on a 6-on-5.

Hanson-Swaner connected on a drop pass from O’Linn to begin scoring in the fourth. ASU pulled to within three as Ali Gronow scored on a 6-on-4. Bagnall, on a man-up, capped the scoring taking a lob pass from O’Linn and stuffing it through the left side of the cage.

The Rainbow Wahine head to the West Coast next week for huge MPSF matches at UCLA (Feb. 22) and UC Irvine (Feb. 23) while participating in the Anteater Invitational Feb. 24-25.
