HONOLULU - Head Coach Michel Roy and utility
Iefke Van Belkum were honored as the Mountain Pacific Sports Federation coach and player of the year released today by the conference office. Goalie
Meike De Nooy and utility Kelly Mason also picked up post-season hardware.
Roy, who is in his fourth season at the helm of the Rainbow Wahine water polo program, has directed his team the past two seasons to the NCAA Championships. The past two seasons, his clubs have finished the MPSF Championships in fourth place. Last weekend, his squad pulled off the upset of the year, knocking off previously undefeated No. 1 USC, 10-9. He owns an overall record of 63-50. He was also selected as the 2005 MPSF co-Coach of the Year along with UCLA's Adam Krikorian.
Van Belkum, a sophomore from Leiden, The Netherlands, was a consensus selection as the league's Most Valuable Player. She has started all 27 matches, leading the squad with 65 goals and topping the MPSF with a 2.41 goals per game average. She has tallied 12 hat-tricks and also named the MVP of last weekend's MPSF Championship scoring 11 goals in Hawai`i's four matches. She is the first UH player to earn MPSF Player of the Week honors, garnering the distinction once in each of the past two seasons.
UH goalie De Nooy was the Rainbow Wahine's lone second team honoree. The junior from Renkum, The Netherlands, is second in the MPSF in saves averaging 8.67 per contest. She is also eighth in the league in goals against, allowing only 6.75 per match.
Mason, a freshman from Auckland, New Zealand, was named to the honorable mention team as well as selected to the league's All-Freshman team. Mason is the second leading scorer for the Rainbow Wahine with 56 goals, averaging 2.04 per match.
Hawai`i, ranked No. 4 in the country, is 17-10 on the season and preparing for the upcoming 2006 NCAA Championship at UC Davis May 12-14.
