Hamamoto Falls In Playoff While Warriors Finish Tied For Fourth At WAC Championships

Final Results

BOISE, Idaho - Jarett Hamamoto (72-69-70=211) finished the Western Athletic Conference Championship in a tie for first at two-under-par, but fell in the second hole of the playoff to New Mexico State's Matt Edwards. The University of Hawai`i Warrior golf team (294-294-291=879), meanwhile, finished in a tie for fourth at 27-over-par.

Hamamoto looked primed to win the WAC individual title, shooting a two-under-par 34 on the front nine. After posting a bogey on 10, the senior put up birdies on the 13th and 17th holes. But it was the 18th hole that brought Hamamoto back to the pack, as he scored a double bogey to allow Edwards to force the playoff.

After Hamamoto, Travis Toyama (73-77-71=221) and Pierre-Henri Soero (75-72-74=221) were both tied for 16th, followed by Ryan Perez (75-77-76=228) in a tie for 33rd and Cody Wolfenbarger (73-80-76=229) in a tie for 36th.

New Mexico State won the team title at +9. They were followed by Fresno State (+14), San Jose State (+26), UH and Boise State (+27), Nevada (+32), Idaho (+56), Utah State (+57) and Louisiana Tech (+59). Behind Edwards and Hamamoto were Fresno State's Jason Anthony and Brian Kelley and Ben Kreger of NMSU at +2.

Hamamoto will now wait to find out if he could earn an at-large bid to the NCAA Tournament as an individual. The official announcement of the NCAA field is scheduled for Monday, May 8.

The WAC also announced the all-WAC teams. Hamamoto was named to the first team while Soero earned second team honors.
