LONG BEACH, Calif. - No. 5 Hawai`i won a pair of Mountain Pacific Sports Federation matches today as part of the Beach Tournament. UH knocked off No. 10 Long Beach State, 10-7, then came back in the afternoon to defeat No. 18 Cal State Northridge, 10-4.
In the LBSU match, the Rainbow Wahine (14-9, 7-5 MPSF) dominated the first quarter scoring five times as Kelly Mason netted the first of her three scores at 6:33, then Iefke Van Belkum tallied back-to-back goals at the 4:33 and 2:18 and Kristy Bagnall popped in another with 48 seconds left to give UH a 4-0 lead. LBSU's Cassie Azevedo scored with 21 seconds remaining, but UH increased it to 5-1 as Lisa van Raalte found the back of the net with six seconds left in the period.
The 49ers (14-11, 4-7 MPSF) got back in the match with four goals in the second quarter, while UH's Mason picked up her second goal giving UH a 6-5 lead at halftime.
In the third quarter, UH's Mason completed her hat-trick at the 3:46 mark, but LBSU posted two more scores in the final 3:27 to tie it at seven heading to the final quarter.
Hawai`i was able to pull away in the fourth with Amy Logan starting the scoring at the 4:23 mark, then Katie Thompson (1:19), and Anna Sieprath (0:15) sealed the victory for the Rainbow Wahine.
Goalkeeper Meike De Nooy made eight stops for UH, while LBSU goalie Kim Hayes recorded nine saves.
In the second match of the day, UH again jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the first quarter and 6-0 at the half as Van Belkum added a pair in the first half along with scores from Mari Yogi, Mason, Bagnall, and Emily Cox.
The Matadors (11-16, 1-9) got on the board in the third quarter with three early goals, but UH twarted any comeback posting four unanswered goals and defeated CSUN, 10-4, to close out the regular season.
UH is idle next week as the Rainbow Wahine prepare for the MPSF Championship at UC Irvine, April 27-30.
