HONOLULU - The Hawai`i men's tennis team handed head coach
John Nelson his first win over a nationally ranked program in three seasons at the school after a 5-2 victory over No. 70 Purdue, Thursday, at the UH Tennis Complex. The win evened the Rainbow Warriors' record at 4-4.
UH's Bryon Weinberg notched the match-clinching fourth team point with a thrilling 6-4, 7-6 (4) decision over Colin Foster at the No. 2 court. Earlier, the Rainbow Warriors (4-4) captured the Nos. 1 and 3 spots as Sascha Heinemann and Ryan Sceats posted straight set victories over Kelubia Mabatah and Kurt Zaske.
After the Boilermakers won at Nos. 4 and 5, UH freshman Jeff Fitch finished off Matt Zollman, 3-6, 6-3, 6-3 at No. 6.
The Rainbow Warriors grabbed the early lead by rallying for the doubles point. After the teams split the Nos. 2 and 3 courts, UH's Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam overcame match point in the tie-breaker. The duo scored the final three points for the 9-8 (6) victory over Foster and Zaske.
UH returns to the court, Saturday, against Arizona State. Match time is 4:00 p.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
