HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i men's tennis team won their second consecutive dual match, defeating in-state rival, Hawai`i-Hilo, 7-0, Friday, at the UH Tennis Complex. After dropping their first three dual matches of the season, the Rainbow Warriors have now won two straight heading into Saturday's contest against NCAA Division III Gustavus Adolphus.
The Rainbow Warriors (2-3) jumped out to a great start by winning all three of the doubles matches to earn the doubles point. Seniors Ryan Sceats and Jarrod Diepraam beat Daniel Pollock and Fuyuki Samejima, a Kaiser High School graduate, 8-5, at the No. 1 position. At the No. 2 court, the team of senior Bryon Weinberg and freshman Jeff Fitch won an 8-4 decision over Christian Schonau and Lars Melskens and senior Yasuo Sakurai and junior Chad Faulk beat Tomas Mikulasek and Mitchel Gelina, 8-1, at No. 3.
UH won all six singles matches to earn the sweep of the Vulcans, ranked No. 30 in the NCAA Division II rankings. Heinemann beat Schonau, 6-3, 7-5 at the No. 1 position and Weinberg defeated Pollock, 6-2, 6-2 at the No. 2 court. Sceats picked up his fifth consecutive singles victory with a 6-0, 6-2 victory over Mikulasek at the No. 3 position. Faulk outlasted Gelina, 4-6, 6-1, 1-0 (10-8) in a super tiebreaker at No. 4. Diepraam earned a victory over Samejima, 6-2, 6-1 at No. 5 and at No. 6, Fitch ousted Melskens, 6-4, 6-0. Junior Derrick Lajola did not play, missing his third straight match, due to injury.
The UH-Gustavus Adolphus match begins at 10:00 a.m. at the UH Tennis Complex.
