Rainbow Wahine Place Fourth At UCSB Gaucho Invitational

SANTA BARBARA, Calif. - The University of Hawai`i women's water polo team dropped two matches on the final day of the UCSB Gaucho Invitational claiming fourth place in the elite field.

Hawai`i (6-6) took No. 2 UCLA to the wire in the third place match before losing, 8-6.

UH, who trailed 1-0 after the first quarter, took the lead early in the second on goals by Kelly Mason and Anna Sieprath. But the Bruins reeled off three straight goals to go up 4-2 before UH's Lisa van Raalte found the net with 14 seconds left before halftime to close the gap to one.

In the third quarter, Kristy Bagnall's 6-on-5 goal tied it at four until UCLA went ahead 5-4 on a goal late in the third.

UCLA struck first in the fourth, but the Rainbow Wahine responded with goals by Iefke Van Belkum and Mason to tie it at six with 4:07 remaining. UCLA closed out the match with two goals in the final 3:35 to win, 8-6.

In the early match, UH dropped a 13-5 decision to No. 1 USC.

Hawai`i got as close as 8-4, but the Trojans got multiple goals from four players to advance to the championship match against Stanford.
