PALO ALTO, Calif. - No. 4 ranked Hawai`i dropped a pair of matches today in the opening day of the Stanford Invitational. UH lost in the morning to No. 16 Arizona State, then dropped the nightcap to No. 1 UCLA at the Avery Aquatic Center.
In the first match of the day, Hawai`i (1-3) started out strong scoring three times in the first quarter on goals by Iefke Van Belkum, Kristy Bagnall, and Amy Logan. Anna Sieprath added the lone goal in the second to take a 4-2 lead at the half.
But Arizona State (4-0) caught fire in the second half scoring trice in the third and added three more in the fourth quarter to upset the Rainbow Wahine, 8-5. Van Belkum added her second goal of the match in the fourth, but it was too late. ASU goalie Caylinn Wallace stopped 13 UH shots in the match.
In the nightcap against No. 1 UCLA, the Bruins (5-0) knocked of the Rainbow Wahine, 10-3.
UCLA took a 4-0 lead at the half. It was the first time UH has been shutout in a half in two years. UCLA then added three more goals in the third and three more in the fourth.
The Rainbow Wahine finishes pool play with an early match against No. 6 California at 7:30 a.m. HST before being seeded for the championship round later in the afternoon.
