HONOLULU - The University of Hawai'i men's basketball team had no problems with its sister-school Division II Hawai'i-Hilo, in a 83-50 exhibition game victory, Saturday night, at the Stan Sheriff Center.
The teams have faced off in recent years, including last year's 110-55 rout in Honolulu.
Guard Matt Lojeski led the way for Hawai'i with 16 points on 6-of-8 shooting. Matt Gibson chipped in with 10 points and had a team-high five assists. Newcomers P.J. Owsley and Todd Follmer added 10 and nine points, respectively, off the bench. All 15 players in uniform appeared in the game.
As a team, Hawai'i out-rebounded Hilo, 50-to-33, while out-shooting the Vulcans, 46 percent to 30 percent.
UH jumped out to a 17-2 lead five minutes into the game behind the duo of Lojeski and Bobby Nash, who combined for 13 points. The 'Bows extended their lead to 33-11 before taking a 42-19 advantage at the break. Lojeski led all scorers with 11 points while Nash and Riley Luettgerodt added seven a piece.
The second half was much of the same as UH extended its lead to as many as 38. UH's reserves received extra playing time, including walk-on guards Jack Miller and Marquez Jackson.
