BROOMFIELD, Colo. - University of Hawai`i Rainbow Wahine golf senior
Dale Gammie (71-71-72=214) picked up her first career individual title at the Heather Farr Memorial at the Omni Interlocken Resort, shooting a three-round score of two-under-par to win by five strokes. Gammie led the Rainbow Wahine to a fourth-place finish in the tournament, carding a 306-300-304=910, 10 shots behind tournament champion Denver.
Gammie, who came into the final round with a two-stroke lead, struggled at the start of the round, posting a double bogey on the par-five fifth hole, her second hole of the day. She carded a birdie on nine, but gave the stroke right back with a bogey on 10. The Pukalani, Maui, native caught fire late in the round, posting back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18, before coasting to her five-stroke victory.
It was Gammie's first career individual title after coming close a few times earlier in her career. She had posted four top-five finishes, including a tie for first, falling in a playoff, in the Bay Area Classic her sophomore year.
Helping in the team effort was freshman Corie Hou (77-78-77=232), who finished in a tie for 27th at 16-over-par. Xyra Suyetsugu (75-75-83=233, +17) tied for 31st, while Nancy Shon (83-77-77=237, +21) finished in a tie for 44th and Carolina Perez (83-77-78=238, +22) tied for 48th.
Denver won the tournament with a team score of 900 (+36). They were followed by four WAC schools in Idaho (+40), San Jose State (+43), UH (+46) and Fresno State (+55), who tied for fifth with tournament host Colorado.
Gammie ended up the only golfer in the tournament to finish under par. Following Gammie were Emily Hoeper (+3) and Stephanie Sherlock (+4) of Denver, Laura Luethke of Fresno State (+5) and Janelle Gomez of San Jose State (+8).
