UH Sailing Begins National Title Defense

AUSTIN, Texas - The University of Hawai`i coed sailing team got off to a strong start at the ICSA Coed Dinghy Championships at Lake Travis. The defending national champs are in first place after the opening day of competition with a total of 66 points.

A total of 12 races, six each in "A" and "B" divisions, were completed after the first day. All-Americans Bryan Lake and Jennifer Warnock tallied a low of 25 points in the "A" division, with a first-place finish in their final race. Scott DeCurtis and Becky Mabardy won their first race of the day in "B" division and finished the day with 41 points. Shandy Buckley also sailed for the Rainbows, who are defending their title against a field of 17 other schools.

"Our goal was to get single-digit points in each race and we pretty much did that with the exception of one race," head coach Andy Johnson said. "It was our kind of conditions today with some really good winds. There's a lot of regatta left, though."

Hobart/William Smith, coming off a first-place finish in the Team Race Championships, is six points behind Hawai`i with 72 points. Dartmouth stands in third with 75. A total of 24 more races are expected over the course of the next two days with the championships concluding on Friday.
