Fresno State Sweeps Hawai'i

HONOLULU - Fresno State (24-8, 3-0 WAC) edged out the Rainbow Wahine (20-20, 1-5 WAC) with a 1-0 victory to sweep the three game series on Sunday at the Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium. Melissa Coogan (10-9) took the loss and Jamie Southern picked up the win for the Bulldogs. Both threw complete games.

The only run of the day came in the fourth inning. Fresno State's Letitia Pacheco was hit by a pitch to lead off the inning. She was pushed to second on a sacrifice bunt by Rachael Donaldson, and moved to third on a single to leftfield by Kristin Sylvester. Next up to bat was Shauna Johnson who hit a single to left to score Pacheco from third but on the play Sylvester took a big turn past third base and UH leftfielder Kaulana Gould threw to third baseman Kristi Yoshizawa to pick off the runner.

Hawai'i led off the first four innings with a base hit, but only one runner was able to make it to third base. UH stranded eight runners all together for the game. Tracie Uchima went 2-4 and Gould was 2-3 to lead the Rainbow Wahine.

Coogan threw seven innings, giving up one run, scattering nine hits, walking one and striking out one. The Bulldogs' Southern also threw a complete game, giving up no runs on six hits with one walk and seven strike outs.

The Rainbow Wahine will now travel to Tulsa, Okla. to take on the Golden Hurricanes and will end the road trip in El Paso, Texas where they will face UTEP. It will be the final time Hawai'i will take on Tulsa and UTEP as WAC opponents. The next Hawai'i home games will be on April 22-23 when they will play Louisiana Tech.
