BERKELEY, Calif. - Sophomore utility
Anna Sieprath scored a career-high four goals in leading No. 4 Hawai`i past No. 5 Long Beach State, 8-7, in a thrilling overtime victory in the 2005 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation Championships quarterfinal game at the University of California's Spieker Aquatic Complex.
UH trailed 5-4 heading to the fourth quarter until Sieprath rattled in her second goal of the game, tying it at the 2:55 mark. The 49ers recaptured the lead on Drue Wawrzynski's second goal of the day at 2:16. But Sieprath provided the heroics, netting her third goal with 12 seconds left in regulation, sending the game to overtime.
In the first of the two, three-minute overtime periods, the Rainbow Wahine struck first as Sieprath posted her fourth goal of the game, just 17 seconds in. UH took a two-goal lead, 8-6, as Monika Kruszona found the back of the net with her second score with 54 second remaining in the first overtime.
LBSU closed the deficit to one, 8-7, as 49er Marina Canetti scored her only goal of the game with 1:02 left in the second overtime. LBSU got the ball back with 12 seconds but could not score.
UH's Meike De Nooy notched six saves in goal for the Rainbow Wahine, while LBSU's Bri Hawkins totaled 14 stops.
With the victory, UH improves to 20-7, the first 20-win season under head coach Michel Roy, and the fifth in the history of the program. Long Beach State falls to 21-7 on the season.
Hawai`i takes on No. 1 UCLA (28-0) Saturday at 11 a.m. HST (2 p.m. PST) in the MPSF Semifinals. The other semifinal match up pits No. 2 USC against No. 3 Stanford. UH lost its two earlier games to the Bruins this season by scores of 13-8 and 6-5. The eight goals given up by UCLA in the first meeting is the most allowed in one game, while the second meeting was the closest win by the Bruins since that date.
UH keeps its chances alive of a possible trip to the 2005 NCAA Women's Water Polo Championships in Ann Arbor, Mich., with the win. The five conference champions earn automatic berths with three other teams selected at-large. The NCAA announcement comes Monday, May 2, at 2 p.m. HST on CSTV (Ch. 610).
