Hawai'i Loses First Game Of Doubleheader

HONOLULU - Jamie Southern and the No.18 Fresno State Bulldogs (22-8, 1-0 WAC) defeated the Rainbow Wahine (20-18, 1-3 WAC), 3-1 in the first game of a doubleheader on Sat., Apr.2. Southern picked up her 12th win of the season and Christina Clark hit her 47th career home run to become the WAC's all-time home run leader. For Hawai'i Melissa Coogan took the loss (10-8).

Coogan retired the first nine FSU batters in a row. But Clark led off the fourth inning with a single to centerfield. Later, with two outs on the inning, she scored off a throwing error by Coogan who was trying to retire the side.

In the top of the sixth, Clark led off the inning for the third time of the game, ripping a line drive home run over the leftfield fence, making the score 2-0 in favor of the Bulldogs. Fresno State extended their lead in the same inning when Southern scored off a Leticia Pacheco single to centerfield.

Southern took a no-hitter into the seventh inning. Noelle Izumi led the inning off, reaching safely on a fielding error by the shortstop. She moved to second on a ground out to the pitcher by Denise Dahlberg. Tyleen Tausaga then was hit by a pitch. Kaulana Gould stepped to the plate and hit a single down the leftfield line to drive in Izumi for Hawai'i's first run, and thus breaking up the no-hitter. Southern finished with a complete game one-hitter, giving up one run with two walks and 10 strike outs.

Coogan went 5.1 innings giving up three runs on four hits with no walks and two strike outs. Kate Robinson came in relief and retired the last five batters in a row.
