TULSA, Okla. - The Rainbow Wahine softball team (21-20, 2-5 WAC) defeated the Tulsa Golden Hurricane (21-23, 2-2 WAC) in a WAC contest, 3-0 at the Donna J. Haresty Sports Complex.
Melissa Coogan (10-9, 2-3 WAC) fired her fifth complete-game shut-out of the season in the win, while Julie Fennell (6-11, 1-2 WAC) took the loss.
Denise Dahlberg delivered the big hit of the game in the top of the third inning. With two runners on, she hit a hard line drive over the centerfielder's head for a stand-up triple. Kristi Yoshizawa and Tracie Uchima, who had both reached by getting hit-by-pitches, scored from first and second respectively. Kaulana Gould then stepped up and hit a looping single over the third baseman, scoring Dahlberg easily from third.
Coogan spaced six hits, with two walks and four strike outs. The shut-out tied Coogan with Kym Weil for No. 3 in career shut-outs with 28. The win broke a five game WAC losing streak for Hawai`i. It also broke a four-game losing streak against Tulsa, who swept UH in 2004.
Dahlberg was the UH's sole "leading hitter" on the night, going 2-4 with a triple, one run scored, and two RBI. Tulsa was led by Julie Shafer who was 2-3 for the game. The Golden Hurricane were able to get runners on in every inning but the first, but were unable to capitalize.
Hawai`i will play Tulsa in a doubleheader tomorrow night, with the first pitch slated for 5:00 pm CST. The games will be web-broadcast on Tulsa's website www.tulsahurricane.com and live stats will be available on UH softball's home page.
