Hawai'i Downs Portland State

Honolulu - The Rainbow Wahine (10-8) moved on in the Pepsi Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament with a 3-1 victory over Portland State (4-8). Melissa Coogan picked up her fifth win on the season, spacing four hits, striking out five, and walking none in seven innings. It was her second complete-game, shut-out of the tourney.

Hawai'i jumped out to an early lead in the top of the first. Tracie Uchima and Tara Harbert led off the inning with back-to-back singles. Denise Dahlberg loaded the bases with a fielder's choice, and Tyleen Tausaga hit a grounder to the shortstop who booted it, allowing Uchima to score from third. But PSU pitcher Michelle Hext settled down and got the last two outs on swinging strike-outs.

In the fifth, UH extended its lead to 3-0. Harber smacked a double to right-center, which was followed by a bunt-single by Dahlberg. Both were driven home on a single to right by Tausaga.

The Rainbow Wahine move on to face the number two seed in the tournament, and seveth ranked team in the country, Alabama at 3pm this afternoon.
