Nevada Holds Off Hawai'i, 3-1

Honolulu - Wolf Pack pitcher Jordan McPherson threw a complete game and held the Rainbow Wahine softball team down, 3-1. She spaced four hits while walking one and striking out four.

Nevada once again scored right away in the top of the first inning. Their number three, four, and five hitters had consecutive hits to score the first run of the game. Jilian Hartfiel started the two-out rally with a single to leftfield. Brittany Lorenzen followed with a base hit to rightfield, and Candice Rainwater came through with a clutch double to centerfield, scoring Hartfiel.

Hawai`i couldn't get a runner past first base until the fourth inning. Denise Dahlberg led off the inning with a single to the shortstop. Two batters later, with Dahlberg on second, Ashley Ruff hit a single up the middle, allowing Dahlberg to sprint around third to score easily. But that was all the Hawai`i offense could manage. UH only had one baserunner in the last three innings, who was Tyleen Tausaga. She reached on a single to right in the bottom of the sixth.

Nevada added two more runs, one each in the sixth and seventh frames. Hartfiel, who went 2-4 for the game, hit a home run over the centerfield wall. The Wolf Pack finished their scoring in the top of the seventh when Cindy Elkins scored on a wild pitch with the bases loaded.

Hawai`i falls to 14-12, 1-1 in the WAC. Nevada is now 9-14, and also 1-1 in the WAC.

The two teams face again tomorrow night at 6 pm for a single game at Rainbow Wahine Softball Stadium in the final game of a three game series.
