HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (1-1) dropped a 9-5 loss to the Alabama Crimson Tide (1-1) in the first game of a double-header at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Darrell Fisherbaugh took the loss in relief while David Robertson got the win for the Crimson Tide.
Gregory Kish again led the way for the 'Bows, going 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run. Luis Avila came up with a 3-for-5 game with two runs, one RBI and a double. Rocky Russo added a 2-for-4 game with a RBI and a run.
The 'Bows were cruising early on, as Russo drove in a run in the first before Daniel Magana added another in the second on a RBI-double, making it 2-0. Kish drove in Joseph Spiers in the fourth to make it 3-0 Hawai`i, while UH starter Stephen Bryant started well, giving up only one hit and one walk with five strikeouts in the first four innings.
But 'Bama finally got to Bryant in the fifth, scoring three runs to tie it at three. The Rainbows responded right away as Avila drove in Russo on a single up the middle to give Hawai`i back the lead at 4-3.
Kish sacrificed in a run in the eighth to make it 5-3. But it wasn't enough insurance as the Crimson Tide tied it with two quick runs in the ninth before scoring four unearned runs, all with two outs, to take the 9-5 victory.
The second game of the double-header is in progress.
