HONOLULU - The University of Hawai`i Rainbow baseball team (2-1) defeated the Alabama Crimson Tide (1-2) 3-23 in front of a crowd of 2,760 in the second half of a double-header at the Les Murakami Stadium Saturday.
Colby Summer pitched 6.0 innings, giving up two runs on six hits to earn the victory in his first NCAA Division I start. Brent Carter took the loss for Alabama while
Richard Olsen pitched three perfect innings with five strikeouts to get the save. The Rainbows dropped the first game of the day, 9-5.
Luis Avila was 1-for-3 with an RBI double while Isaac Omura added a 1-for-4 game with a run and a double.
Alabama took the early lead in the third, scoring on a double to left field by Allen Rice. But Hawai`i quickly answered in the fourth as Matthew Inouye and Rocky Russo both scored on a double-steal that led to two Alabama errors in the same play.
The Crimson Tide tied it up the sixth on an RBI-triple by Morrow Thomley, before Avila hit what proved to be the game-winning RBI-double to right field in the bottom of the sixth, scoring Omura, to put the 'Bows up 3-2.
That was all that Olsen needed, as he had one stretch where he struck out five of the six batters he faced before forcing a ground out to end the game.
The two teams will close out their four-game series tomorrow at 1:05 p.m. at the Les Murakami Stadium. Justin Costi is scheduled to make his first start for UH against Alabama's T.J. Large.
