UH Sailors Fall Short at District Championships

HONOLULU - Competing on their home waters, three Hawaii sailors finished in the top eight at the Men's Singlehanded Pacific Coast Championships at Sand Island, Oct. 22-23. However, none of the sailors finished high enough to qualify for next month's nationals, hosted by Hawaii.

Greg Helias of USC captured the district championship with a total of 59 points, while Emory Wager of Stanford finished second with a total of 65 points. Both Helias and Wager will return to the same waters in less than a month as qualifiers for the 2005 ICSA Singlehanded North American Championship, hosted by UH, Nov. 18-20. Representing Hawaii at that event will be Tinja Anderson-Mitterling who captured the Women's PCCs on Friday.

UH, however, will be without a men's competitor at next month's nationals. The Rainbows entered the maximum four sailors allowed for the PCCs. Three UH sailors placed in the top eight with sophomore Mike Scott the top finisher in fifth. Also in the top ten were Mark Spector (6th) and Eric Oppen (8th). UH's top sailor, Bryan Lake, was knocked out of competition on the first day with an injured knee and was able to complete just four out of 15 races .
