RIVERSIDE, Calif. - Four members of the Hawai`i women's cross country team set personal bests at the UC Riverside Invitational, Saturday, at the 5K UCR Agricultural Operations Course. The Rainbow Wahine finished 13th in their first Division I competition of the season.
"Four of our runners ran lifetime bests and two others ran seasonal bests," head coach Carmyn James said. "We had three runners run sub-20 minute times for the first time this year. We're running better as a team and I'm proud of their performance."
For the fourth time this season, junior Sheena Thain was the team's top finisher, placing 47th overall with a season-best time of 19:30. Moments later, junior Michel Wilson crossed the finish line with a lifetime-best 19:33 (51st). Junior Sharlene Carillo ran a season-best 19:58 for 64th. Newcomers Annett Wichmann (20:48, 77th) and McKenzie Wallace (20:55, 83rd) also ran personal bests.
Junior Ashley Monfort competed but her season-best time of 21:37 (90th) did not qualify for the team score.
Cal State Fullerton (96) won the women's division edging Western Athletic Conference member San Jose State (102). Concordia's Natalie Perkins took home the individual title (17:23).
The Rainbow Wahine take the next week off before competing in the Santa Clara Invitational, Saturday, Oct. 15.
